Trip duration:
14 days

Rafting
Price:

Day 1:

Arrival at Irkutsk (plane, train) or at the Station of Sludyanka of the Trans Siberian railway. The bus meeting the group at Irkutsk Airport passes Sludyanka, thus it will be the place of the group meeting. Possible visit to the unique Museum of Stones in Sludyanka. Transfer to the district center of Kyren, situated in the center of the Tunkin Hollow. Excursion with scientific workers of ''Tunkin Hollow National Park''. A visit to a Buddhist temple (datsan), possible horse riding. Rest, adaptation, an acquaintance evening party. Staying overnight at the National Park hotel or at private family inns (owners have been specially trained according to B&B system).

Day 2:

Breakfast, transfer from Kyren - Zemchug (Pearl) - Hangar-Ulla resort. The resort is founded near the mineral springs, long used by local inhabitants for sanitation and treatment of various diseases. It is interesting to mention that the two springs throw onto the surface the water which is different in its composure and curing properties, though only two dozens of meters separate them. Campings near barchan on the way to the resort or near the springs or the Kharagun River. Trekking (on foot or on horses) up to the Valley of the Kharatun River. As we go uphill the character of vegetation is changing, huge poplars give way to conifers typical of the mountain taiga. Night in tents. During halts impatient fishermen can try their luck and go fishing - there is much fish (grayling) in the Kharagun River.

Days 3:

Trekking along the valley of the Kharagun River to its tributary the Khamyr Brook and climbing along its steep serpentine to the Korovie (Cow) Lake - a small mirror of dark water set in a frame of cedars. Night in tents near the lake. This place is a kind of ''the last camp'' before the mountain pass at the height of 2300m that is devoid of forests and a long descent from it to the River of Bolshoy Uguday River, which is the Zun-Murin tributary.

Days 4:

Mountain pass 2200m. In one of the places the path crosses a dense thicket of pink radiola more known as ''golden root''. Descending from the pass and trekking along the Kazarmenny Brook to the Bolshoy Uruguday River; passing the ancient volcano crater and numerous stone scatterings. From the place where the brook falls into the Bolshoy Uruguday River one can see a snow hill, which is quite unexpected so far from the mountain pass. This phenomenon - the absence of snow in the upper part of the pass and massive snow hills in the middle and lower flow of rivers and brooks is characteristic of the given route. The end of trekking of this day depends on the weather not only this day but also on the previous ones. If the water level in the Bolshoy Uruguday River allows it, we cross it and spend a night in tents. If the water is high we camp on the left bank of the River and prepare our catamaran for crossing.

Days 5:

If the water is high, we cross the river and disassemble the catamaran. Climbing to the second mountain pass (1700m), descending from it and trekking to Zun-Marin. Camping on a vast glade on the left bank.

Days 6:

Assembling the catamarans, bath (possible).

Days 7:

Rafting to a suitable place in the region of ''Zmeika (Snake)'' or ''Liamute'' Rapids. Fishing. Another possibility for bath.

Days 8:

Rafting to the K-2 Rapids. These rapids are the second in their complexity on this route and situated in a beautiful and not very deep canyon above which there is one of the best places in the Zun-Murin River for camping located on a terrace. Rest for half of the day, fishing (gray harius bites well in the canyon below the rapids).

Days 9:

Rafting to the mouth of the Khangarul River, the longest tributary of the Zun- Murin River. Camping near the entrance to the canyon ("Khangarul Gates"). The Khangarul is a floating river and if light sport vessels and experienced crews are available in the group it is possible to organize rafting down the Khangarul River the rapids of which belong to the 5th category (only if there is time reserve and easily movable vessels).

Days 10:

Camping. Fishing (in the tributary - greyling, in the canyon -taimen (salmon trout) and lenok. Walking along the bank one can see these fish moving in the stream.

Days 11:

Passing "The Shurik Rapids" (5th category), the most complex rapid on our route. Reinforced crews of catamarans are formed here for safety (crews consisting of minimum two guides and most experienced participants). Further rafting downstream the Zum-Murin is less difficult technically, but beautiful. However, it is not time to relax as all the long tributaries have been passed and any rain is enough to make the water quickly rise all over the vast Zum-Murin basin.

Days 12:

Rafting down to any suitable place for camping on a high enough bank 30-40 km from the Zum-Murin settlement.

Days 13:

Camping for a day (bath, fishing). Here in the low part of the river there are chances to catch a large taimen (salmon trout).

Days 14: Rafting to the settlement of Zum-Murin in the Tunkin Hollow. Catamaran disassembling. Transfer to Sludyanka and Irkutsk and further according to the schedule of the Baikal part of the tour.

Notes

Extension:

Voyage to the finest nature protected areas on the Baikal shore, including the Olkhon island (Pribaikal'sky National Park), Zabaikal'sky national park, Baikalo-Lensky or Barguzinsky nature reserves, etc.

Note.

1. The plan of Days 12-14 can be altered on the spot depending on the weather. Thus a day's camping can be used as a reserve day for starting in case the weather worsens and there is a threat of water rising in order to leave behind most of the obstacles dangerous in high water.

2. In summer time, vaccination against encephalitis is necessary.

3. This itinerary can be changed or combined with another programs according to your choice.
